Tir na n'Og Farm

The Highland Fold: I started raising Highland cattle because I liked how they looked. They are also a hardy, gentle breed, capable of easily handling cold Iowa winters on rough forage. They make use of the pastures that are too steep to plough or make hay on. Highlands are an ancient breed, originating hundreds of years ago in Scotland. Known for their excellent meat and gentle disposition they are an eye-catching addition to the farm.

Drambuie

Drambuie is my first and oldest Highland. She will be 21 years old this year and is still going strong. I bought her from a farm in Wisconsin soon after taking over the farm and she has consistently provided me with strong healthy calves. Her latest is Amadan (newborn in photo) born in October 2009. His name means 'Fool' in Gaelic, for waiting until it was cold and wet to be born. He is healthy and already playing with Sile the Border Collie..

Aoidgh (Hugh):

the bull, joined the fold in 2006 and has sired several nice, healthy calves including: Triu Gabhain (Gavin), Thing 2, Deireadgh Fomhair (Jeeroo), Mean Fomhair (Maan), Mi Eanair (Anaar), and most recently, Amadan. Unfortunately, Aoidgh died from complications of pneumonia in the summer of 2009. His gentle presence is missed, but his horns still grace the entrance to the barn yard.

Beasag (Bessie)

Bessie is the first calf born to Drambuie on the farm. She is shown here with her second calf. Triu Gabhain (third calf or Gavin) now an 18 month old steer.

In addition to the adult cattle above I currently still have Deireadh Fomhair, Mean Fomhair, Triu Gabhain, Mi Eanair, and Amadan on the farm.
