Growing Pains
Planning for Planting
One of the benefits of the mild winter has been to make it much easier to keep warm, and also not having to plow snow. One drawback has been a lack of snow to provide good moisture for the upcoming spring crops. The soil was very dry going into winter, so let's hope for good spring rains to spur the asparagus on to a bumper crop.
This year I will start harvest on a small plot of purple asparagus planted three years ago. Two more plots of green asparagus should also come into production so I am hoping for a good year.
February is onion planting time; yes, that's right its time to start those onion seeds indoors to get the plants up to size in time for an early spring transplant. I've got a couple varieties of leeks, shallots, and onions already in the works, though for my biggest crops I rely on plants bought from wholesale seed outlets.
So, while it is still winter outside, the vegetable season has already started and I'm already looking forward to, and worryining about, the upcoming growing season. Keep watching my site on LocalDirt.com to see when things come in season.
