Growing Pains

End of the Season

At long last, winter is upon us and all of the crops are finally out of the fields. I just harvested the last of the broccoli this morning (3 Dec), an extra long season due to the mild weather of October and November. There is still kale left, but now that it will stay below freezing for a few days even that will call it quits for winter.

I'm looking forward to unplugging the produce cooler and converting it to use as potato storage. The little bit of heat it will need for the pratties will result in a big saving in electrical use. I still have an abundant supply of squash and potatoes, even a few fall carrots left for sale.

So now I can sit back, put my feet up and watch it snow from the comfort of the chair by the woodstove...oh no, that only a dream! Now starts the season of planning for next year's crops, equipment repair, and building maintenance. And of course there is the livestock, which need daily attention. So, while winter is a more relaxed time on the farm, the work never really stops. Who in their right mind would even want it to?
