Gourmet Garlics for 2011
We have more than 25 varieties under cultivation, but not all of them are available for sale each year. Here is a list of the varieties we hope to have for sale beginning in May 2011.
German Red: Hardneck rocambole, very flavorful with mostly large cloves. This hardneck stores very well and will keep at room temperaturewell into winter. This is the farm's biggest producer, 'rescued' from a neighbors old garden plot.
Music: Hardneck, large flavorful cloves, another good storing hardneck. This is the first year we have this variety to offer.
Chesnook Red: Hardneck, standard purple-stripe, very flavorful hardneck. keeps its flavor well when roasted.
Bavarian Purple: Another newcomer to the farm, this hardneck has a fiery bite with great flavor.
Chinese Pink: A very early softneck for those who can't wait until July for fresh garlic. This variety should be available by late-May. This is the first year we will have this or any of the softneck varieties for sale. The Chinese Pink didn't much care for the cold spring weather, and will be in limited supply this year.
Polish Softneck: A silverskin softneck variaty, widely grown in the eastern US. This variety roasts well while keeping its strong spicy flavor.
Western Rose: A long-storing silverskin softneck, large cloves with a sharp garlic flavor.
Possibilities: the availability of these will depend on how productive they are this year as we are trying to build up our seedstock.
